La Hoz

The hamlet of La Hoz is located northwest of the municipality of Iznájar, at the foot of the Subbética Mountains, with the river that gives its name to the hamlet marking the boundary between the municipalities of Iznájar and Rute.

It is likely that the toponym of the place was derived from the remains of the emerging structures of the existing Iberian fortification in the hamlet.

Water is a constant in Iznájar, and thus the origin of most of its hamlets is found along riverbeds, as is the case with the hamlet of La Hoz, or near the numerous watering holes or springs in the municipal area. With the presence of the river, there is evidence of a rich ecosystem, highlighting abundant flora, with a variety of plants such as chickweed, plantain, sow thistle, iris, water lilies, poplars, and reed beds.

The vegetable gardens, olive groves, extensive poplar or aspen groves, and the limestone terrain that forms the "Garganta" where the La Hoz River originates, constitute elements of unique beauty in the landscape.

Archaeological remains found in the hamlet indicate Iberian presence, with discoveries of ceramics with geometric decoration and fragments of amphorae from a similar period. The Iberian fortified enclosure located in the place known as "Cerro del Castillejo" is particularly noteworthy, a site with a strategic position, featuring steep slopes on all sides, serving an evident control function over the river and the paths and trails that border it.

Among the elements of civil architecture, the "Bridge over the La Hoz River" stands out, connecting the municipalities of Rute and Iznájar.
